Windows 10 user numbers continue to grow, including a larger share of the desktop audience, according to recent reports. The program snagged 6.6 percent of all web traffic from desktop OSs in the past month, an increase of nearly 1.5 percent over August figures.
Since the rollout of the July 29 free upgrade, millions of people have downloaded the program. However, mobile device, laptop and tablet users have made up the majority of the early adopters. Now, the growth in desktop user numbers may be a sign that deeper penetration into the business market is beginning to occur.
The increase in desktop user numbers is good news for Microsoft for more reasons than one. The move to Windows 10 was calculated to win back the loyalty of desktop users, so an increase in adoption among those users is a good sign that the millions the company poured into program development is beginning to pay off. Windows 8 left a poor impression on many desktop users, and Microsoft seems to have specifically addressed some of their biggest complaints, including the lack of a Start menu and the addition of Cortana Voice Assistance.
However, there is no denying that the fact that the upgrade is free for the first year has been a huge drawing card for those who are ready to change their operating systems. Microsoft needs to see strong growth the first 12 months in order to justify the eventual price tag of $199 for Pro users.
Of course, the growth of Windows 10 inevitably takes something away from the growth of Microsoft's other platforms. Windows 7 and Windows 8 experienced stagnancy or even drops in numbers during this time period. However, if Microsoft can engage enough users with Windows 10, the eventual outcome will still be positive for the company.
